Start with identity before reading the numbers
- Manufacturer and production site, where stated or required.
- Product name and grade code matching the purchase order and label.
- Unique lot or batch number matching every package and shipping record.
- Manufacture, retest or expiry information according to the agreed shelf-life convention.
- Specification number or revision used for release.
- Authorised approval and issue date.
Know what kind of result you are looking at
Common Certificate of Analysis result formats| Format | Meaning | Review question |
|---|
| Numeric result | Measured value is reported | Is the method and unit the agreed one? |
|---|
| Pass / conforms | Attribute met an acceptance criterion | What test or controlled check supports the statement? |
|---|
| Less than limit | Result is below a reporting or specification threshold | Is the threshold sensitive enough for the requirement? |
|---|
| Typical value | Informational, not necessarily a release limit | Can the property vary outside this value and still be released? |
|---|
| By calculation | Value derived from other measurements | Is the calculation defined in the specification? |
|---|
Interpret the core physical and chemical fields
Frequent gelatin CoA fields| Field | What it indicates | Important caution |
|---|
| Bloom strength | Standard gel strength | Conditioning and method details affect comparability |
|---|
| Viscosity | Flow of a defined solution | Concentration and temperature must match |
|---|
| Moisture | Water content at test | Method and handling influence result |
|---|
| Ash | Inorganic residue after controlled ignition | A limit does not identify individual minerals |
|---|
| pH | Acidity of a defined preparation | Preparation concentration and temperature matter |
|---|
| Clarity / transmittance | Optical appearance by a defined method | Wavelength, cell and concentration must match |
|---|
| Microbiology | Results for specified organisms or counts | Sampling plan and units are part of the result |
|---|
Treat exceptions as a controlled decision
A value inside the printed limit can still signal drift when compared with historical lots; a value outside the purchase specification is not made acceptable by a supplier's broader internal limit. Resolve mismatches before use through the agreed deviation process, with technical assessment and documented approval.
Use batch results for trending, not just filing
- Track critical results by supplier, grade and lot over time.
- Watch movement toward limits and changes in variability.
- Connect incoming results with production performance and complaints.
- Investigate method, site or source changes when the pattern shifts.
