The four links

A complete chain connects approved source, verified intake, controlled production and released batch. Each link needs its own records, and each needs to reference the one before it. Where any link records only that a step happened, without connecting it to identified material, the chain is broken even though every stage was performed.

Intake is where identity is established

The point at which raw material enters the facility is where documentation is checked, the consignment is identified and its halal status is recorded. Everything downstream refers back to that identity. Weak intake control cannot be compensated for later, which is why it deserves more attention than its routine appearance suggests.

Production records must preserve identity

As material moves through preparation, extraction, purification and drying, the records need to keep the connection between input and output. Where batches are combined the record must show what was combined. This is the part of the system that most often degrades over time as production pressures encourage shortcuts.

The test is a live trace, not a document

The meaningful assessment is to pick a finished batch at random and ask for the chain back to raw material intake, with a time limit. A system that can answer within hours is working. One that requires days of reconstruction may be technically complete but will not serve during a genuine incident.

Traceability supports more than compliance

The same records that satisfy an auditor also allow a quality problem to be bounded quickly — identifying which batches share a raw material source and which do not. That containment capability is often worth more commercially than the compliance function that justified building the system.
